Twelve letters. Endless connections.

How to Play Letter Boxed

Six simple steps, illustrated with our own game. Learn the rules, complete a word chain and share your result.

The goal: make a chain of words that uses all 12 letters around the square.

Use at least three letters per word. Move to a different side for each letter. Start your next word with the last letter of your previous word.

01 / START

Start the game

You’ll see a square with three letters on each side. The middle starts at 0/12 letters used.

Choose any letter to begin. There is no timer. This version has one practice board, so you can learn at your own pace.

02 / ENTER

Enter your word

Tap the letter tiles or type in Your word. Then choose Submit word or press Enter.

Try CLOVE on this board. C → L → O → V → E switches sides with every letter.

Use Delete to remove the last letter. Undo takes back an action; Redo restores it.

03 / CHECK

Check the feedback

A valid word joins your word chain. After CLOVE, the counter shows 5/12 and the next input starts with E.

  • Filled tiles: letters in the word you are entering.
  • Dots: letters already covered by accepted words.
  • A message: tells you when a word is accepted or why it was rejected.

If a word fails, edit it and try again. A real word can still break the board rules. Colors vary with your theme; the counter and messages explain your progress too.

04 / COMPLETE

Complete the puzzle

Keep connecting words until you have used every letter at least once. Reusing a letter is allowed.

Worked solution: CLOVE → EXPIRATION. The connecting letter is E, and the two words cover all twelve letters.

At 12/12, the puzzle is complete and your final word is bold in the word chain. Try to finish with fewer words on your next attempt.

05 / RESULTS

View your results

The result shows your word count and score. You earn 10 points per distinct letter used, plus 100 points for completing the board: 220 points for a completed puzzle.

Open Statistics to see attempts, wins, win rate and average words. Practice streaks count consecutive completed attempts, not calendar days.

Records stay in this browser. Undo, Redo and reloading do not count the same win twice.

A few beginner tips

  • Check which letters are still unused before choosing your next word.
  • Think of a word that starts with your current word’s ending letter.
  • Read rejection messages before restarting. You may only need to change one letter.

Next: plan a better word chain or understand rejected words.

Quick FAQS

Can I pick two letters on the same side?

Not consecutively. Move to another side between them.

Why does my next word already contain a letter?

It must begin with the previous word’s final letter. The game fills that letter in for you.

Does every real English word work?

No. A word must follow the board rules and appear in this game’s dictionary. Read the word-list details.

Can I get a new board by restarting?

No. Restart begins another attempt on this same practice board.
